Lockdown Wine Pairings

spinach lasagne

So with wine o’clock being the salve for days of lockdown and homeschooling, we thought it would be fun to have wine pairings for not only fine dining meals but the comfort food that people are craving during the quarantine.

Justin Leith, who has been one of our wine gurus since 2005 has generously taken the time to put together a list of the best wines to complement our most popular home delivery meals.

Spinach and Ricotta Lasagne : Stump Jump Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvèdre, McLaren Vale, SA
The generosity of the Grenache in this wine makes it super approachable red, black fruits, black olives. Soft enough to take on the delicate flavours of the ricotta, tomato and spinach.

Fish Pie : LS Merchants Vermentino, Margaret River, WA
A spectacular Australian version of this wine showing, sea salt, jasmine, Tahitian limes with a riesling like malic acidity to cut the delicious richness of the pie.

Butter Chicken and Malai Kofta : d’Arenberg Olive Grove Chardonnay, Adelaide Hills, SA
The subtle spice of these Indian dishes lend themselves well to the more concentrated deeper stone fruit characters of peach with subtle vanilla and a fuller richer palate.

Spaghetti Bolognese : Fratelli Chianti, Tuscany, Italy
This wine has some bright dark cherry and savoury notes, 90% Sangiovese with a 10%blend of modern Cabernet and Merlot to soften and flesh out the wine.
A natural match made in heaven.

Thai Fish Cakes : Tim Adams Pinot Gris, Clare Valley, SA
This wine displays spicy stone fruits including nectarine and citrus with a clean finish,
A touch of residual sugar to marry up to the chili spice.

Sausage Rolls and Hummus : Maison Brendan, Villa Aix AOP, Provence, France
For snacking and entertaining any time of the day you cannot beat Rose.
Bright red fruits with some light stone fruits and a soft creamy mouthful finish, but crisp and clean.

Most of these wines are available at our local bottle-o The Cellar. A big thanks to Liette and the crew there for staying open until 8PM so we chefs can get our pinot noir after a long day in the kitchen!
